Bahia Mar Hotel: Responsible Tourism
Since opening in 2014, Bahia Mar has been dedicated to making a positive contribution to the surrounding community. The hotel is owned by a Mozambican who earned his masters degree in the US and served in the Government of Mozambique. The General Manager has a degree in marine science and eco-tourism management. Bahia Mar was the first certified Fair Trade Tourism business in Vilankulo.

Bahia Mar and it’s guests are the sustaining supports of Quinto Congresso Community Preschool which provides learn through play development and education to 40 to 60 three to five years each year in classrooms under a Baobab in the neighborhood. A visit to the school can be arranged by speaking with a receptionist. You can support the costs of a single student for a year with a donation of just $50.

Bahia Mar is a sustaining supporter of the beach cleanup crew managed by ParCo that clears the coast of Vilankulo (abou 20 km) every Saturday morning year round. The program clears tons of plastic away from the ocean and provides a small subsidy to out of work youth and elders year round.

In 2018, Bahia Mar sponsored a huge campaign to end seahorse poaching in Mangalisse through education, enforcement and tourism (as an alternative income). That created the Indigo Seahorse Snorkeling Adventure run by the local community with support from ParCo. ParCo provides feedback and logistical support to ensure a quality experience that continues to discourage fisherpeople from poaching seahorse for the illicit TCM supply chain.

Bahia Mar plants a tree in Vilankulo for every tourist that visits the hotel. They also contribute to carbon off-setting reforestation of degraded forests in the north of Mozambique. ParCo will likely team up with Bahia Mar when we start work on Mangrove restoration.
